“Singularity transmissions” is a sculptural interactive tower designed to simultaneously converge the voices of up to 15 individuals into one unified transmission through the use of tin-can phones. The crude analog phone transmission is recorded digitally at the towers soundboard apex in real-time and output into a womb-like listening chamber at the towers base. The echoing quality of the purely analog and nostalgic tin can phone brings the participants back to a simpler thread of humanity. Experiencing the listening chamber one may pick up the intimate vibrations of a subtle song, a boisterous speech, a declaration of humanity, or screams of exuberance all layered upon each other in a Playa stream of consciousness. If music is the chosen voice, one can plug in to a specially designed tin can phone converter and capture a timeless rhythm that will be heard and remembered in the vast sea that is the Playas voice.
To follow the theme of 2012 Burning Man Fertility 2.0 we are designing the tower to resemble a flower pistil embracing the base of a transmission tower. It is the expression of the dichotomy between technology and nature, but in a symbiotic relationship fostering the fertility of ideas. Our underlying hope is that this project will serve as the voice of Burning Man 2012, and carry on into new forms of expression beyond the project and into the hands of the world. We are gifting all the audio to all, and we hope that it will be remixed into music, art, and performance.
